MemBrain®

The "Brain"iest thing to happen to waterproof/breathable technology! MemBrain®, developed specifically for Marmot in conjunction with Toray Industries, works at a molecular level to keep you warm and dry. It is a major breakthrough, micro-thin polyurethane polymer film laminated/bonded to different performance fabrics specifically chosen by Marmot to enhance its function. It is not a waterproof coating having limited breathability and inconsistent application thickness. It is a consistent thickness membrane which is dramatically different than all other coating waterproof-breathable technologies. MemBrain® has been recently improved, producing an even wider comfort range. In addition the film has been improved for even longer term durability, and the lamination dot matrix has been changed to increase the overall breathability. Other than Gore-Tex® outerwear, it is the "best of the rest".

MemBrain breathability changes with the temperature changes in your clothing system, hence the brathability is self-regulating and adjusts its overall breathability to your activity level, while remaining waterproof at all times.

When does it work?

It is always working! In the early morning when you are standing around cooking breakfast, waiting for that water to boil, there is heat retention and moderate breathability. When you strap on a pack and start to exert moisture and overheat, there is increased breathability, and moisture transfer. This allows more water vapor to pass through the fabric, keeping you drier while the fabric remains waterproof.

Breathability: Hohenstein Ret 58+(Lower is better)

This puts MemBrain 2-Layer laminates into the most breathable category established by the Hohenstein Institute. Membrain has a lower resistance to moisture vapor transmission than any other polyurethane or polyester coating or laminate. i.e. "The best of the rest"

Water Repellency: Spray Test 80/20

Marmot's special water-repellent Ultra-DWR finish is pressed into the fibers of all MemBrain shell fabrics, not just sprayed or rolled on the surface like most other fabrics. A new resin used by Marmot will make the DWR last longer than ever before, and reduce condensation potential.

Waterproofness: Over 100 PSI on a Mullins tester

On the modified British Standard Suter (MBS) tester, it is rated at 40+ PSI. This is higher than can be generated even in the worst conditions. Its like focusing all of the weight of a 240 lb person onto the surface area of the top of a popcan, and it still is waterproof.

Windproofness: 0 CFM(Cubic feet/min)

Functionally totally windproof.
